In Canada, abortion is a legal medical act. And, the Government of Quebec states that the decision to continue a pregnancy or to have an abortion is a personal decision that belongs to the woman and to her alone. In France, abortion is also legal since the Veil law of 1975. But what about elsewhere?
In Benin, West Africa, the legislation repressing abortion remained for a long time modeled on a French colonial law established in the 1920s. Since March 2003 however, a reproductive health law authorizes the practice of therapeutic abortion, under three conditions.
Yet, most teenage girls do not fall within the existing legal framework when they wish to terminate their pregnancy. They are usually aborted underground, by non-medical staff, or unqualified medical staff, and most times in poor hygienic conditions. Many voices are rising to demand that this service be offered to all women, as any other medical service. Meanwhile, for almost 100 years, the law and society imposed their diktat on the sexual trajectories of the young girls, increasing the risks to their physical and mental health. This is why young Beninese girls are incredible amazons.
We invite you to come and learn more about that Drama in the Shadow before letting yourself be transported by the words of the slam and by beninese and african music .
