Un concert qui offre deux sonates de Ludwig van Beethoven, en explorant les contrastes, les consistances et l'ésthetique de ses styles différents. Premièrement, vous entendrez uneouevre du jeune Beethoven, la première sonate pour piano et violoncelle op. 5 no. 1; et finalement, le belle sonate pour piano en mi majeur, op. 109. Entre les deux, sera quatre movements de Kreisleriana, des pièces de fantasie par Robert Schumann. 

Thomas Fortner, from Houston, Texas, is currently pursuing a masters in music degree at McGill University, studying cello with Elizabeth Dolin, and orchestral conducting with Alexis Hauser. He first began conducting lessons at the age of four with his father then beginning the cello at the age of eight. He studied conducting with Donald Schleicher and Eduardo Diazmuñoz. Thomas also spent summers in Switzerland studying cello with Francis Gouton, principal cellist of the Stuttgart Opera.  

Pianist Karl Hirzer was born in Vancouver, in 1989. Growing up in the suburb of New Westminster, he studied music throughout his childhood and youth, beginning piano lessons at the age of six and playing other instruments in school (and out-of-school) ensembles during his teens. After completing his ARCT performance exam through the RCM program at age 17, Karl enrolled at the University of Victoria in order to pursue a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance studying with Professor Bruce Vogt. Here, he also gained an interest in conducting, and founded a progressive heavy metal band, For Your Liberation, that would record and tour throughout Canada. In 2011, Mr. Hirzer won the Johann Strauss Scholarship Competition enabling him to study in the masterclass sesisons of Robert Levin and Olivier Gardon at the Mozarteum Sommerakadmie in Salzburg. The following year, he founded the Cordillera Trio with school colleagues and performed throughout British Columbia, including an appearance at the Salt Spring Island Chamber Music Festival. Karl is currently continuing his piano studies with Ilya Poletaev at McGill University, as a first year graduate student at the Schulich School of Music.
