John Kofi Dapaah is a pianist crossing the boundaries of the classical and jazz world. John has performed in recitals and concerts in Japan, Austria and throughout Canada. He has played in recital series such as Les Grands Concerts, Cathedral Arts Series, and Jugend am Klavier to name a few. Music has taken John on a voyage through many parts of the world and has brought him to reflect on a range of styles including classical, jazz and gospel piano. John began his classical piano studies at the age of 7 with Tabuchi Masako in Muroran, Japan. His family’s relocation to Canada in 2001 caused John to continue his studies independently. In 2007, he enrolled in Carleton's University’s B.Mus. program where Dapaah studied with Verna Jacobson and Nicole Presentey as well as jazz piano with Steve Boudreau and Mark Ferguson. In 2009, John’s composed work for string quartet was performed with choreography at Ottawa’s National Arts Centre. As an undergrad, John continued on to perform at receptions in the Rideau Hall hosted by the former and existing Governor Generals of Canada; Michaëlle Jean and the David Johnston. John made his orchestral debut with the Gatineau Conservatory Orchestra playing Mozart's piano concerto no. 23 in A major. He pursued the final year of his undergraduate music studies at the Kunstuniversität in Graz. In Graz, he studied piano performance with Dr. Eike Straub. He obtained his master’s degree from the Schulich School of Music at McGill University, where he studied with Marina Mdivani. John has won numerous scholarships and awards including the 2014 Marion Hewitt Memorial Scholarship and the "Bill and June Joe" fund from the Ottawa Kiwanis Festival. Currently he is a pupil of Nicole Presentey, runs an active studio in Ottawa Ontario and performs throughout Canada.
